Porsche Fast Facts
Porsche is a German automobile manufacturer specializing in high-performance sports cars, sedans, and SUVs. Founded by Austrian engineer Ferdinand Porsche in 1931, the company initially offered motor vehicle development work and consulting, but did not build any cars under its own name. Porsche was commissioned by the German government to design a “car for the people,” which resulted in the development of the Volkswagen Beetle, one of the most successful car designs of all time. Many components from the Beetle were used to design the Porsche 64, developed in 1939.
